A supplement for occasional sleeping problems
See Good Night Rx for a natural product with kava extract, valerian, hops, melatonin, and other herbs and nutrients that helps you relax and induce sleep. Good Night Rx is formulated by Ray Sahelian, M.D. for those who have occasional sleepless nights or those who wish to occasionally relax in the evening after a stressful day. Dr. Sahelian says, "It took me more than 10 years or trying and testing various herbal combinations to finally formulate a natural supplement that helped induce sleep but yet did not cause morning grogginess or other bothersome side effects related to prescription sleep products."

Kava is an herb that has been widely used for hundreds of years by native South Pacific Islanders. This kava extract is standardized to assure a guaranteed percentage of its active components known as kavalactones. This highest quality 100 mg kava root extract product contains 30% kavalactones which is the ideal dosage to provide the relaxation benefits.

What you may feel after using a kava supplement: A relaxing and calming feeling, less irritable, less tense, less nervous.

CAUTION: Kava root is not the type of supplement, like vitamin C, that you take every day. At most use one kava capsule two or three times a week and take a full week off each month. Kava root powder or extract use on a daily basis, in rare cases, can lead to liver harm. Do not use kava supplements if you are taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) or statin drugs for cholesterol such as Lipitor, Zocor, and others. Do not take kava supplements if you have any kind of liver disease or taking medicines that cause harm to the liver. Do not take kava supplements if you drink alcohol daily or have problems with alcohol abuse.

Kava supplement Questions:
Q. Can a kava capsule be opened and drank as a tea?
   A. Some people open the capsules to make a kava tea or drink in a cup or kava bowl, but this root doesn't taste that well.

Q. Can I drink alcohol while taking kava pills?
   A. We don't recommend using alcohol and kava pills together, there may be excessive sedation and lack of balance or coordination.

Q. Can I take a kava pill and Good Night Rx together?
   A. Since they both contain kava herb, we suggest you not use them the same day.

Q. Is it okay to use statins drugs such as LIpitor with kava root powder or extract?
   A. Sometimes statin drugs for cholesterol can cause harm to the liver, therefore consult with your doctor and if kava pill use is approved, use it less frequently, at most once or twice a week.

Q. Can kava supplement be taken while driving a car?
   A. In some people, daytime use of kava supplement can cause relaxation and grogginess, therefore it is best to avoid kava use while driving or operating machinery.

Q. Can kava supplements be used before public speaking for relaxation?
   A. Some people may find kava supplements helpful, however we think propranolol is more effective for most people and it does not cause sedation.

Q. Can someone take kava supplement along with a muscle relaxer or antianxiety drug such as Xanax?
   A. We don't suggest using kava supplements with Xanax or Valium or other
benzodiazepines.

Q. I have been reading about the supplement kava and how it can be a useful supplement in dealing with stress. My daughter, who is 12, has recently been experiencing panic attacks and a friend recommended we try giving her a kava product. Reading the label, I see where anyone under 18 should not take it.
   A. In our opinion, kava
supplements should not be used by children or teenagers.

 Q. I’ve reviewed your pages concerning Kava supplements which I occasionally have discussions about in my stress management and Insomnia classes. I’ve recently written the FDA for updates on their warnings about kava supplements. I haven’t seen any follow-up studies since the initial releases several years ago-perhaps you can offer your insights? Also, you mentioned that one should not take kava if they drink alcohol. Do you mean with the kava , or if they consume alcohol on a regular basis-or both?
    A. To the best of our interpretation of the kava studies, kava herb may potentially harm the liver if used daily for prolonged periods. For this reason, the maximum use of a kava supplement should be three times a week with a full week off a month. A kava supplement can be taken with a glass of wine in the evening if there will be no driving or using of heavy machinery and the person is just staying home and going to bed. Those who drink a large amount of alcohol on a regular basis may have some liver harm or damage and it would not be advised for them to not use kava . This herb is also not advised to those who take statin drugs used for cholesterol or acetaminophen pain killer, or any drug that has the potential to damage the liver.

Q. Is kava root a good aphrodisiac or libido enhancer?
   A. Kava may help you relax and get you in the mood, but it numbs the senses and can cause sleepiness. We do not consider kava to have aphrodisiac properties. Consider instead horny goat weed,
tribulus, maca, muira puama, catuaba, and other
natural aphrodisiacs. In fact, high dosages of kava used regularly may cause male impotence.
