Availability of Aloe Vera Products:
An aloe vera product can be found as aloe vera juice, gel, and aloe vera drink. There are also various forms of aloe vera creams that can be applied topically on the skin. You can also find aloe vera in tablet form, such as the tablets we carry. Aloe vera gel contains carbohydrate polymers, such as glucomannans or pectic acid, plus various other organic and inorganic compounds. Sometimes the terms aloe vera gel and aloe vera juice are not clearly defined by makers of aloe vera and are often confused by consumers.

Q. How often can I take aloe vera tablets?
   A. Little research is available in humans regarding the long term use of aloe vera gel or tablet. Therefore, just to be on the safe side, you may consider using an internal aloe vera product at most 5 days a week and it may be a good idea to take at least a week off each month. We prefer being cautious until more aloe vera research is done in humans.

Q. Would an aloe vera supplement product be considered a weight loss pill?
   A. Aloe vera is not likely to be an effective weight loss supplement by itself. For an effective appetite suppressant, see
Diet Rx info.

Side effects, safety, toxicity
Abdominal cramps and diarrhea have been mentioned with oral use of aloe vera. Diarrhea, caused by the laxative effect of excess intake, can decrease the absorption of certain drugs. No major life threatening adverse events have been published medical journals as far as we know.

In vivo evidence of the immunomodulatory activity of orally administered Aloe vera gel.
Arch Pharm Res. 2010 Mar; College of Pharmacy, Chungbuk National University, Cheongju, 361-763, Korea.
The gels of Aloe species contain immunomodulatory components such as aloctin A and acemannan. We evaluated the in vivo immunomodulatory activity of processed Aloe vera gel (PAG) in mice. Oral administration of PAG significantly reduced the growth of C. albicans in the spleen and kidney following intravenous injection of C. albicans in normal mice. PAG administration also reduced the growth of C. albicans in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. PAG administration did not increase ovalbumin (OVA)-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) generation in normal mice, but did increase it in high-fat-diet induced diabetic mice. These findings provide the first clear evidence for the immune influenicng activity of orally administered Aloe vera gel.
