Devil's claw herb (Harpagophytum procumbens), is a plant widely used in South African traditional medicine, specially by Bushmen, Hottentots and Bantu. Extracts of Devil’s claw roots are widely used in Europe. Two of the active principles of Devil’s claw root are harpagoside and harpagide. The mechanism of action of Devil’s claw herb is still unclear and disputed. Devil's claw’s common name is attributed to its peculiar clawlike seedpods which are covered with small hooklike protuberances.

The Devils Claw root or "tuber" is  preferred by herbalists because of its high concentration of the beneficial component harpagoside.

Q. Please inform me of the amount of harpagoside in mg in your 960 mg devil's claw herb capsules. It says it has 1.5% but have no idea of how that relates to mg..
   A. There is 260 mg of devil's claw root standardized to 1.5 perdent harpagoside, which means there is 3.9 mg of harpagoside in the 260 mg devil's claw root extract. Plus, there is some harpagoside within the 700 mg root extract but Nature's Way, the company making this Devil's claw herb product, does not specifiy how much harpagoside is in this part. Therefore, there is at least 3.9 mg of harpagoside, and an additional amount that we are not aware of since this product is not made by Advance Physician Formulas, we are resellers.

Q. Has there been any research with the combination of devil's claw herb and boswellia serrata herb?
   A. Not that we are aware of.
