Q. How does 500 mg of pomegranate extract pill compare to 8 ounces of pomegranate juice? I would like to substitute the pomegranate extract capsules for for the juice that I've been drinking.
   A. This is a good question and we really don't have a good answer. It is very difficult to compare a pomegranate pill to juice since no studies have been done to find out which form is better and what the equivalency of juice is to extract. The pomegranate juice has a lot of calories and fructose. On average, most people take 1 to 3 pomegranate capsules a day. Studies in the future could perhaps shed some light.

Q. My question is on pomegranate nutrition fact, specifically calories. How many calories would be in a pomegranate about four inches in diameter?
   A. If you eat a pomegranate fruit of that size, expect to have about 120 calories. Pomegranate health benefits and antioxidant benefit can be also obtained through a supplement if you don't wish to ingest about 25 grams of sugar. One option is to alternate between drinking pomegranate juice, taking a pomegranate supplement, or eating a whole fruit.

Q. Are there any serious reactions taking a pomegranate extract pill with a mangosteen supplement?
   A. We do not expect any untoward side effects since both mangosteen and pomegranate supplements have a very low side effect profile.

Q. Which is a more beneficial supplement, pomegranate or resveratrol?
   A. They are both healthy supplements, and you may wish to alternate their use just as you would with an apple and an orange. Both fruits are healthy but we cannot say one is better than the other. Both pomegranate and resveratrol supplements have their unique benefits.

Q. After how many pomegranate caps a day would a person have significant side effects?
   A. We suggest taking 2 to 4 pomegranate caps a day a few days a week. It's difficult to say how many pomegranate caps it would take to cause side effects. Our research team has not exceeded five caps a day for a week and we have not had side effects with five pomegranate caps.

This Perspective reviews the chemical and functional studies of pomegranate as well as the virtues and dangers of ellagic acid, and concludes that synergy among the various pomegranate fractions and phytochemicals is the most important factor for assessing strength of pomegranate nutraceutical preparations, and not simply the concentration of ellagic acid. Ellagic acid concentration in final products is likely to have an optimal therapeutic range, which very likely is less than 40%. The wisdom of designing and engineering pomegranate nutraceutical products to maximize therapeutic or chemopreventive synergy is suggested, as opposed to preparations that are designed and engineered simply to maximize the concentration of a single phytochemical.
