Yohimbe and yohimbine
Yohimbe is the name of an African tree whose bark contains yohimbe alkaloids. One of these alkaloids is yohimbine. Yohimbine, alone, is available by prescription. When you take a yohimbe pill, a small percentage will be yohimbine. Thefefore yohimbe and yohimbine are not the same thing. Simply, yohimbe bark contains a small amount of a substance called yohimbine.

Yohimbe danger and cautions:
Is yohimbe dangerous? Yohimbe bark, particularly in high dosages may be dangerous to people with heart problems. Yohimbe or yohimbine should be used cautiously by anyone with a medical condition, particularly those with hypertension, heart disease, diabetes or those taking medicines, particularly tranquilizers, antidepressants, sedatives, antihistamines, amphetamines or other stimulants, including caffeine. Yohimbe bark induces noradrenaline secretion. Yohimbe danger depends on the dosage. In low dosages, such as a quarter of a capsule, yohimbe is not dangerous. But if a person with heart disease takes a full capsule or 2 capsules, heart rhythm disturbances could occur.

Yohimbe side effects
Some of the side effects of high dose yohimbe bark include anxiety, changes in blood pressure, heart rate increase or palpitations, dizziness, headache, visual disturbances, nausea or abdominal cramps, and increased body temperature. An uncomfortable yohimbe side effect is sweating, particularly underarm sweating.

Q. I wanted to let you know about yohimbe side effects I experienced. Rather than follow your suggestions of starting with a portion of a yohimbe capsule, I took two instead. Within an hour I experienced yohimbe side effects consisting of nausea, kind of a sick feeling, with my heart pounding, and sweating in the arm pits. Even my vision was blurred for a few hours. Tell your customers not to take a high dosage of yohimbe supplement.
   A. Thanks for letting us know. These are classic yohimbe side effects, and they are dosage dependent. That is why we suggest using a portion of a capsule, and never more than one capsule.

Additional side effects and cautions:
Yohimbe bark contains yohimbine, an alpha-2-adrenergic blocking agent. Do not buy yohimbe herb or extract supplements if you have high blood pressure, heart disease (including irregular rhythm), kidney, thyroid or liver disease, seizure disorder or stroke. Do not take yohimbe herb with any antidepressant medications or MAO inhibitors, or with foods containing high amounts of tyramine (such as cheese or red wine) or with decongestants, diet aids, products containing phenylpropanolamine, hormones such as DHEA or pregnenolone, or supplements that have a stimulating effects such as many sex herbs, SAM-e, tyrosine, etc. Consult your doctor before yohimbe supplement use if you have any health problems or are taking any medications. Discontinue use and consult your doctors if you experience high blood pressure, heart palpitations or rapid heart beat, dizziness, headache, rash, tremors, depression or hallucinations. Other yohimbe side effects may include nervousness, anxiety, mood changes, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, urinary retention, dilation of pupils, or skin flushing. Yohimbe side effects are dosage dependent. That means low yohimbe dosages cause few side effects whereas the adverse effects increase as the yohimbe dosage is increased.

Yohimbe bark and extract questions
Q. Does yohimbe bark cause anxiety? Before I buy such products I would also like to know how long the effects of yohimbe bark extract last. Does Passion Rx with yohimbe bark extract cause anxiety?
   A. The use of a yohimbe supplement on a regular basis may cause anxiety. However, Passion Rx with yohimbe bark extract is not known to cause anxiety since the formula is combined with other herbs that balance some of the yohiimbe side effects. When you take a yohimbe bark supplement, the benefits and side effects last a few hours.

Q. Is yohimbe bark extract effective for weight loss?
   A. Some people take this supplement for weight loss, but, in our opinion, the side effects of yohimbe are too unpleasant for this herb to be effective and agreeable for the purposes of weight loss. A much better product for appetite suppression is Diet Rx.

Q. Is it okay to take a yohimbe supplement with fish oil capsules? What about with Eyesight Rx or Mind Power Rx?
   A. We don't see any reason why a yohimbe supplement can't be combined with one to four fish oil capsules a day. We don't suggest using yohimbe herb or Passion Rx with yohimbe the same day as Eyesight Rx or Mind Power Rx.

Q. Is it okay to go to the gym after taking a yohimbe supplement? What about going for a run?
   A. Yohimbe bark increases body temperature, so we don't think it's a good idea to take it and engage in heavy physical activity, particularly in warm weather. Avoid yohimbe herb if you plan to be exposed to hot temperatures. Drink cold water if you take yohimbe herb in order to keep your body temperature from rising.

Where does yohimbe bark come from?
Yohimbe is a tree native to the forests of western Africa, especially Cameroon, Zaire, and Gabon. Yohimbe is an evergreen tree that grows in the jungles of Africa. It can reach a height of 90 feet. The bark of the yohimbe tree is gathered at any time of the year. In Africa, yohimbe bark has been used for generations as an aphrodisiac and sexual stimulant. It was also used by warriors as a stimulant before battle. In the 1890s, medicinal use of yohimbe appeared in Europe.

Yohimbe extract
Yohimbe supplements can come in various extracts. The most popular yohimbe extract potencies are yohimbe extract 2 percent, 4 percent, 8 percent, 10 percent, and yohimbe bark 20 percent. If you take a yohimbe extract supplement, the dosage required depends on the potency of the extract.
