Possible Pregenenolone Side Effects:
Pregenelone supplement use may lead to side effects which include overstimulation and insomnia, irritability, anger or anxiety, acne, headache, possible scalp hair loss if used daily for prolonged periods. Pregnenolone converts into DHEA, which in turn converts into testosterone and possibly on to DHT. Other more serious side effects could include irregularities of heart rhythm, heart palpitations, even on as low a dose as 5 to 10 mg. Do not take pregnenolone if you have a heart condition or taking heart medications. Do not take pregnenolone if you are taking other hormones unless your doctor approves. Consider using other supplements first to address a particular health concern before resorting to the use of hormones. Just because pregnenolone is available over the counter does not mean it is a weak supplement or not as potent as a prescription hormone. Pregnenolone in high doses is very potent.
I am interested in purchasing the book Pregnenolone: Nature's Feel Good hormone by Dr. Ray Sahelian. Do you carry it?
This book is from the mid 1990s and the doctor prefers people read newer information on his website rather than the older information in the book.
I had been on Prednisone shots 2 kinds once a month for inflammation in the lungs caused by asthma which was caused by black mold and a leaking carbon dioxide furnace. After finding several natural anti inflammatory herbs I was able to down grade to Hydrocortisone 40mg pills in AM & PM/ When I try to reduce the dose I start to get worse in my breathing. Would Pregnenolone help me be able to cut back on the Hydrocort? I am taking DHEA every day. If not Pregnenolone what else would you recommend to help me get off Hydrocort and maintain good breathing. I am 72 and in very good health otherwise.
Sorry but we are not able to provide individual medical advice.

Q.I have been taking bioidentical pregnenolone 30 mg. orally for about 9 months. My levels are normal and my doctor wants me to wean off. I started taking 20 mg for a week now and have been having migraine headaches and anxiety. I wanted to know if this is normal withdrawal and how I can wean off this stuff. My doctor says just to play with the dosage but I really would like to know what I can do to get myself off this and be reassured these symptoms of withdrawal are normal.
A. Withdrawal symptoms can occur and each person can gradually wean off based on how well they tolerate the symptoms.
Levels in women throughout the monthly cycle
Q. Is it true that a female's body is signaled to produce pregnenolone by the action of an egg being released from the ovary? If so, does this mean that a female body has higher levels of pregnenolone on about day 14 of her cycle? I am considering supplementing pregnenolone ONLY on days 13,14, and 15 for this reason.
A. It appears from limited studies that this hormone is present in higher levels in the follicular phase of the luteal cycle, which is the last half of the monthly cycle. How this influences the decision to supplement is another question. Much depends on the reason one wishes to use this hormone and that should likely be the focus as opposed to when the level is highest in the body.
Plasma 17-OH-Pregnenolone in Normal Subjects.
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol. 39
A radioimmunoassay for 17-OH-pregnenolone was developed and applied to the study of this steroid in human plasma. In normal subjects plasma 17-OH-pregnenolone is mainly of adrenal origin. It was largely suppressible with dexamethasone, readily responsive to ACTH and followed a diurnal rhythm similar to that of plasma fluorogenic corticosteroids with which there was a significant correlation.Testicular secretion of 17-OH-pregnenolone could be inferred from the observation that while dexamethasone suppressed plasma concentrations incompletely combined treatments with dexamethasone and methyltestosterone caused the steroid to disappear completely. In contrast, women receiving dexamethasone alone had similar levels of 17-OH-pregnenolone to women receiving dexamethasone plus estrogen. Ovarian secretion of 17-OH-pregnenolone was suggested by the finding of significantly lower levels of plasma 17-OH-pregnenolone in women receiving estrogen than in untreated woman. This difference was not seen in postmenopausal women. Plasma 17-OH-pregnenolone was significantly higher during the follicular than during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. However, the ovarian contribution of 17-OH-pregnenolone to plasma (0.2 ng/ml or less) was probably inadequate to account for the phasic variation observed. The mechanism underlying the changes in plasma levels of 17-OH-pregnenolone seen during the menstrual cycle is unclear.
