Green tea extract supplement questions
Q. Does this green tea extract supplement contain caffeine?
A. The caffeine content in a green tea extract product can vary from batch to batch but it is generally is 5 to 20 mg per capsule.
Q. Do doctors normally advocate that people take green tea supplements for their antioxidant and other benefits? If so, what's the amount of green tea supplement they -- or that you -- advise taking daily? I find studies showing green tea benefits this or that, but I can't find anyone who actually suggests a daily amount.
A. There is no single answer that would apply to everyone since there are many factors that are involved in green tea dosage including age, medical condition, other supplements taken, other medicines used, activity level, whether they drink coffee or tea and how much, sleep patterns, etc. Also it depends on the green tea extract potency, the quality of the green tea product, etc. As a general rule, it is safe to drink one or two cups of green tea a day, and it appears safe to take a green tea extract pill a few times a week.
Q. Does a green tea pill help with weight loss?
A. Some people notice that taking a green tea diet pill helps with reducing food cravings which may lead to eating less. Whether, in the long fun, taking a green tea diet pill results in permanent weight loss has not been fully evaluated yet.
Q. Can green tea and hoodia be taken together?
A. Yes, as long as the dosages are reasonable and not excessive. The combination of green tea and hoodia is popular, and there are many green tea pill diet products that contain hoodia.
Q. I would like to buy a green tea diet pill. Is it okay to take more than 2 green tea capsules a day?
A. For brief periods of time taking 2 green tea capsules a day may be fine, but for long term use one green tea capsule a few times a week seems a better option.

Study, DNA protection benefit
Prevention of oxidative DNA damage in inner organs and lymphocytes of rats by green tea extract.
Eur J Nutr. 2009 Oct 23. Kager N, Ferk F, Kundi M, Wagner KH, Mi??k M, Knasm?ller S. Department of Medicine I, Institute of Cancer Research, Medical University of Vienna, Borschkegasse 8a, 1090, Vienna, Austria.
The goal of the study was the investigation of the prevention of strand breaks and DNA migration attributable to endogenous oxidation of bases by green tea extract in inner organs and lymphocytes of untreated rats. In addition, immunological parameters and biochemical markers were monitored.DNA migration was measured in hepatocytes, colonocytes and lymphocytes after consumption of a low (1.3 mg/kg bw per day, 5 days) and a high dose (6.5 mg/kg bw per day, 5 days) of green tea extract. In addition, immunological parameters (TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-4 and IL-10), the total antioxidant capacity and oxidized low-density lipoproteins were determined in plasma. No evidence for reduction in DNA damage was found with a lower dose, whereas with the higher dose, reduction in DNA migration was observed in lymphocytes; also, in colonocytes and hepatocytes protective effects were found. Our results show that a dose of green tea extract, which is equivalent to consumption of 500 ml green tea per day in humans protects lymphocytes and to a lesser extent inner organs against oxidative DNA damage, while no effect was seen with a lower dose corresponding to an uptake of 100 ml/p/day.
