Read these cautions before use
DHEA is converted in the body to androgens (such as testosterone). DHEA dosages higher than 5 mg are discouraged due to side effects. We do not sell DHEA in high dosages such as 10, 25, and 50 mg because we feel they are unsafe and could lead to serious health problems. See below for a list of potential DHEA side effects on high doses.
Many people who are deficient in DHEA notice benefits from taking this hormone. They feel more energetic, have a sense of vitality, more mental energy, and feel more sexually aroused. Others take DHEA even though they are not deficient in this hormone. Keep in mind there are non-hormone supplements that can give you similar benefits. If you wish to enhance sexuality without the use of hormones, use Passion Rx, a potent natural herbal sexual pill that works within a few days. For mental energy and alertness, see Mind Power Rx. For more natural energy and vitality, take a capsule or two a day of MultiVit Rx.
DHEA has been promoted as a weight loss agent but we don't feel it is a good choice for this purpose. If you would like to eat less, Diet Rx is a good option.

What is DHEA?
Short for dehydroepiandrosterone, DHEA is the most abundant hormone made by the adrenal glands, which are located just above the kidneys. After DHEA is made by these glands it goes into the bloodstream where it is converted into DHEAS and from then on it travels all over the body and goes into our cells, where it is converted into male hormones (known as androgens) or female hormones (known as estrogens). Small amounts of DHEA are also made in the brain by neurons (brain cells). Hence DHEA can be called a neurosteroid.
DHEA side effects: High doses taken for prolonged periods can lead to a number of side effects including acne, irritability, hair thinning, and heart rhythm disturbances, known as arrhythmias. We only sell 5 mg DHEA, not the higher amounts since we believe high doses are potentially dangerous.
Q. Where does a DHEA supplement come from?
A. DHEA supplements are made commercially from a plant of the Dioscorea family [wild yams] found in abundance in Mexico. Extracts of this plant contain a steroidal saponin called diosgenin which may be converted in a laboratory by a series of 6 to 8 chemical reactions into DHEA. In the human body, DHEA is made from cholesterol.
Q. I plan to buy DHEA 5mg from your website. I am looking for micronized DHEA supplement as that is supposedly a better form but your formula doesn't say anything about being micronized. Please let me know if the DHEA available at your website is micronized or not?
A. The DHEA 5 mg supplement product is not micronized. There is no evidence or research to support that micronized DHEA is better than the regular form.
Q. I have read that DHEA is an anti-aging hormone. Is that true?
A. DHEA acts as a precursor to testosterone and estrogen. The body's DHEA production peaks in young adulthood and gradually declines with age; because of this, supplements of DHEA are widely marketed as an anti-aging panacea. However, there is no long term research to indicate that the use of DHEA supplements have anti-aging benefit. Perhaps DHEA may be helpful in very low dosages, such as 1 or 2 mg, in certain people, but taking high amounts could lead to hair loss and other side effects. A study lasting at least 10 years needs to be done before we have any clues as to the anti-aging potential of DHEA. Thus far no such study has been done.
Q. I have ordered a bottle of your DHEA supplement and I was wondering if you use DHEA or DHEAS for your product.
A. It is the former. Once this hormone supplement is ingested and absorbed into the bloodstream, it is sulfated to DHEAS.
Q. How often and for how long should you take a "holiday" when taking DHEA? I am taking 5mg per day.
A. Most people do not need to supplement with this natural hormone whereas others may find it of benefit. The idea is to use the least amount in the least frequency that provides the benefits. No single answer would apply to everyone.
Emails from users regarding DHEA side effects
Just a quick note to validate DHEA does cause heart arrythmia in some people, and I am one of those. I couldn't figure out why I started having palpitations and arrhythmia. I went through all the tests, and nothing mechanically wrong with my heart. The cardiologist said "I just didn't fit the profile" for anything wrong. So, he wanted to do electrical ablation. I said no, and would wait it out. I stopped taking all my nutritional supplements for four months, and the arrhythmia went away. Started taking the DHEA again at 25mg daily and within 3 weeks the arrhythmia / palpitations had returned. Someone needs to warn people about the DHEA side effects of heart palpitations.
I am female and 40 yeasrs old. I have been taking DHEA as suggested in the "Metabolic Plan" a book written by Stephen Cherniske for a couple of weeks only when I started to notice that my moods were very aggressive and not in a good way. Always angry, and uptight. I also started breaking out which I have not done since high school, then I started losing my hair. I have a lot of hair to begin with so losing some everyday is normal for me but I was losing it in strands. I googled DHEA to see if there were side effects and sure enough everything I was experiencing was due to it so I quit cold turkey. It has been about 2 weeks I am finding that my hair is falling out just a little less but I am exhausted. My muscles are tired and achy. Is this another effect of the withdrawal? How long does this last and is there anything I can take to flush out my system?
Time is the best way option to get over the effects regarding the misuse of this hormone. For some, hair stops falling out right away and returns. But for others it may take quite a few weeks or months. Most of the fatigue and exhaustion symptoms should go away within a few weeks. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with good diet, exercise and deep sleep are the best options.
