Choline in foods and its function
Choline, found in foods as varied as liver, beef, eggs, and chocolate, plays an important role in the formation of cell membranes -- the outer sheath that keeps cells intact. In addition, it works as a building block for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and other chemical messengers in the brain and the rest of the body.

Choline in our diet and in food
This nutrient, usually as part of phosphatidyl choline, or lecithin, is present in a number of foods, particularly eggs, fish, legumes, nuts, and meats, as well as in human breast milk. Dietary intake of choline in a healthy diet ranges from 300 to 900 mg a day. Most individuals who have a normal diet are not likely to be deficient in choline, however there are certain people that, even with a good diet, may still not get enough choline for optimum health. In the past it was thought that the human body made adequate amounts of choline when needed. However, studies show volunteers on a choline deficient diet are not able to produce enough of this nutrient.*

Choline benefit and side effects
Most people who take one capsule of choline do not experience any significant side effects. A common side effect of choline ingestion when dosages exceed 500 mg is increased body temperature and sweating. Nausea and loss of appetite can also result from very high doses. 
Most people who take a choline supplement notice having more mental focus and being more alert. A positive side effect is that supplementation can help with erections.

Q. I just wanted to let you know about a choline side effect. I took 3 capsules of the choline supplement and felt nausea and increased body temperature that lasted a couple of hours.
   A. Yes, choline side effects do include nausea and elevated body temperature. This is not common when taking one capsule.

USDA guidelines
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that men consume daily about 550 milligrams of choline a day and women about 400 milligrams. This minimum choline intake each day should prevent liver dysfunction. However, some individuals may need up to 800 milligrams of choline each day to prevent or reverse the damage caused by a deficiency of this nutrient.

Q. Would you suggest taking choline with or without food?
   A. If you would like to notice the mental alertness more acutely, you can take it on an empty stomach. If you are taking choline for general health improvement and you are not as interested in its mental effects, then take it with food.

Q. I see there is choline present in Passion Rx. Is it okay to take additional choline when taking a Passion Rx capsule?
   A. Passion Rx is potent by itself, we suggest not taking a choline pill the same day.

Q. Is choline related to TMG and DMG?
   A. Yes. They have similar chemical structures. TMG has three methyl groups and DMG has two methyl groups.

Q. I will like to know if your product choline is okay to take while I am pregnant.
    A.This is a decision you and your doctor need to make since we can't advise anyone regarding what to take or how much. Some women are deficient in this nutrient during pregnancy.

Sex and menopausal status influence human dietary requirements for the nutrient choline.

Although humans require dietary choline for methyl donation, membrane function, and neurotransmission, choline can also be derived from the de novo synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, which is up-regulated by estrogen. A recommended Adequate Intake (AI) exists; however, an Estimated Average Requirement has not been set because of a lack of sufficient human data. The objective of the study was to evaluate the dietary requirements for choline in healthy men and women and to investigate the clinical sequel of choline deficiency. Fifty-seven adult subjects (26 men, 16 pre-menopausal women, 15 postmenopausal women) were fed a diet containing 550 mg choline for 10 d followed by <50 mg choline with or without a folic acid supplement (400 micrograms / day per randomization) for up to 42 days. Subjects who developed organ dysfunction during this diet had normal organ function restored after incremental amounts of choline were added back to the diet. Blood and urine were monitored for signs of toxicity and metabolite concentrations, and liver fat was assessed by using magnetic resonance imaging. When deprived of dietary choline, 77% of men and 80% of postmenopausal women developed fatty liver or muscle damage, whereas only 44% of premenopausal women developed such signs of organ dysfunction. Moreover, 6 men developed these signs while consuming 550 mg choline. Folic acid supplementation did not alter the subjects' response. Subject characteristics (eg, menopausal status) modulated the dietary requirement for choline, and a daily intake at the current AI was not sufficient to prevent organ dysfunction in 19 of the subjects.
