Q. I have a question about dosage for a Pycnogenol extract 50 mg tablets that I bought from another supplement company. On the website, the suggested dosage is “one Pycnogenol pine bark extract tablet a few times a week,” but on the bottle it says, “1 tablet for each 50-60 pounds of body weight for the first week or two. Thereafter, adjust intake to 1 Pycnogenol tablet for each 100-120 pounds of body weight.” Which is correct?
A. There are no studies that have determined the ideal dosage for Pycnogenol supplementation for long term use. As a rule, the suggestions on a bottle tend to be on the higher end of the dosage scale, and they are often written with the misconception that this is the only supplement someone is taking. However, most people take several supplements a day, and therefore it is safer to take less of any particular supplement when combining them with others. Having said this, it also depends whether the Pycnogenol pine bark extract is being used as a treatment for a particular condition, in which case the dosage would be higher or more frequent. In summary, there is not enough data to determine the ideal dosage of Pyconogenol supplement and how it combines or interacts with other medicines, herbs, or nutrients. Hence, in the case of long term use, it may be better to take less rather than more.
Q. I have read that Pycnogenol may have sex enhancing effects, is this true?
A. A small number of studies have indicated that perhaps Pycnogenol helps by dilating blood vessels. There are much more potent natural sex boosters that work quicker.
