Benefit
L-Theanine is an amino acid that promotes a state of relaxation without drowsiness. It is also shown to support healthy blood pressure levels.

  • Improves Stress Management
  • Promotes Relaxation
  • Supports Healthy Blood Pressure Levels
  • Dietary Supplement

Information and benefit
L-Theanine, L-gamma-glutamylethylamide, is one of the major amino acid components in green tea and black tea. There's been very little human research regarding L-theanine supplementation but limited studies indicate it has a role to play in stress reduction.

Suggested Use, dosage, how much to take
As a dietary supplement, take one to three capsules on an empty stomach when you need to feel relaxed, or as recommended by your health care provider. For better absorption, take at least 2 to 3 hours after a meal or a half hour before eating. Although some people respond to 1 or 2 pills, others may need 3 to feel a sense of relaxation.

Combining with prescription medications
Q.
Can I take a L-theanine supplement together with a prescription sleeping pill or a prescription anti-anxiety agent such as Ativan, Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, lorazepam, or alprazolam?
A. In rare cases unexpected reactions can occur when a supplement and a pharmaceutical drug are combined, such as benzodiazepines. Therefore, to be cautious, we suggest not using theanine with a sedative medication together unless your doctor approves. For more information about this topic, side effects, and the latest research, see Theanine article.

Combining with other herbs and supplements that help with relaxation
Q.
Can I take L-Theanine supplement the same time as ashwagandha, 5-HTP, graviola, or passionflower herbs?
A. It is best to first learn how each supplement makes you feel by itself (it will take several days of trial). When you combine several calming supplements there is the potential for heavy sedation, which could interfere with daytime functioning and driving. Once you know how each herb or nutrient makes you feel, then you will have a better idea on how to combine them and how much to take of each. Graviola herb has good sedating abilities and can be used in the evening to promote sleep.

Combining with natural sleeping pills like melatonin
Q. What about taking it at night along with a natural sleeping pill such as melatonin or 5-HTP?
A. As far as L-theanine and natural sleeping pills, first learn how each one helps you with your sleep by itself. When you are quite familiar with each, it is possible to combine one capsule of L-theanine and one capsule of an herbal sleep product if your doctor approves. For sleep purposes take it at least 2 hours before bedtime. Theanine works better for relaxation than it does as a treatment for insomnia.

Q. Does L-theanine help with sleep?
A. Some people report that L-theanine used on an empty stomach a couple of hours before bedtime helps them sleep deeper, although not everyone experiences this effect. We find 5-HTP, melatonin or graviola to be more effective.

Combining with 5-HTP
Q.
Can 5-HTP be taken along with L-Theanine pill?
A. When combining supplements, the most important factor is the dosage. If low doses are used, most supplements can be combined well together. If very high amounts are used, side effects can occur. In the case of 5-HTP and L-theanine pills, a dose of 50 mg of 5-HTP and 100 mg L-theanine dosage could be combined if a person is healthy and is not taking pharmaceutical medicines or other supplements. Sedation may occur in some people and absorption of 5-HTP and L-theanine may be influenced by the amount of food in the stomach.

Research
Asia Pac J Clin Nutr. 2017. Theanine: the unique amino acid in the tea plant as an oral hepatoprotective agent. For thousands of years, humans have consumed tea made from leaves of Camellia sinensis, first as a medicinal herb and then as a widely popular beverage. Theanine, a tea-derived, unique, nonproteinic amino acid, has been extensively studied for its health benefits. Recently, multiple lines of evidence have proven its beneficial effects on hepatic and immune functions. One possible mechanism for its biological activity involves the downregulation of the inflammatory response through the induction of nitric oxide production and glutathione synthesis.
